Give 5/4 Need

A unique "hands-on" service  program designed for children who will enter 5th grade this fall through high school. We have opportunities for leadership roles for our older high school youth. Students work directly with various service agencies in Lake County and in the process learn about food, housing and education inequities.

“Messengers of Hope”
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.
–Jeremiah 29:11

The St. James Give 5/4 Need program has “switched things up” for 2021 – to create a wonderful week of service, fellowship and faith building! The Social Ministry Outreach and Christian Education Committees have created an exciting program this summer with some distinct differences. The COVID landscape is evolving and we are grateful many of our members have been vaccinated – of course, the children haven’t been yet. We are focusing the program with these considerations in mind:

  • Camp will meet 5 days OVER THE SUMMER, rather than one entire week. Hopefully, this will give more youth an opportunity to participate as able. It will be valuable to attend one day or all five! Offerings will be held on:

o Sunday, June 27 – 10:30am-1:30pm includes lunch (following outdoor worship)

o Monday, June 28 – 9:00am-12Noon

o Sunday, July 18 – 10:30am-1:30pm includes lunch (following outdoor worship)

o Monday, July 19 – 9:00am-12Noon

o Monday, August 2 – 9:00am-12Noon

  • Service, fellowship, and faith building will all take place on the St. James campus – it’s time to “Get Back to Church”! Outreach partners, we will liaison with include St. James partners such as COOL Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, Lutheran Social Service of Illinois, North Chicago Community Partners, PADS, and Waukegan to College. Art and gardening projects at church will also be part of the five days!

  • We will social distance, accommodating family preferences and adhering to current local guidelines. Events will be held outdoors as feasible – if we move indoors due to weather, masks will be required and we will work in small groups throughout the building.

  • There will be no charge for participation. We have applied for grants from Thrivent and Lake Forest Bank and are grateful for their past support.
